

The novel Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19), has brought about a lot of changes in the way of life of every individual and as such extra care must be taken to keep a healthy lifestyle at home, the work place and anywhere you find yourselves. You must maintain a healthy diet, have a good rest, stay active and make social contact with loved ones through the phone or internet.
Staying positive, eating well and exercising are essential to having a healthy lifestyle. The current situation demands that, you do what is right for your body. Living and maintaining a balanced healthy lifestyle can help prevent and reduce the spread of COVID-19. It is important to adopt a varied and balanced diet, in order to ensure a healthy supply of all the nutrients required for the proper functioning of the body.

Your daily or weekly food intake should include the various food groups, cereals, tubers, fruit and vegetables, meat, fish and eggs, milk and dairy products. A combination of these foods, provides energy and specific nutrients if consumed every day.

It is essential to note that alcohol is not food and there is no safe and recommended quantity one can take at a time. It is beneficial for you to refrain from drinking alcohol. If you have to drink alcohol, drink in moderation. Also, remember never to drink on an empty stomach and during working hours.

To stay healthy, one needs to exercise regularly for at least 30 minutes each day. A little bit of exercise every day, even at home, is essential not only for your health, but also for your psychological well-being. Physical activity reduces stress and anxiety, improves mood and sleep quality. Being healthy is also about staying mentally and emotionally fit.
Below are some tips for healthy living:
- Drink plenty of water every day (at least 1.5 litres)
- Limit the intake of salt and sugar.
- Avoid skipping meals. Do not starve yourself.
- Eat fruits and vegetables daily, preferably fresh ones to boost the immune system.
- Avoid smoking as it weakens the lungs and heart.
- Avoid or reduce the intake of alcohol.
- Exercise regularly
Keeping a healthy lifestyle and observing the various precautionary measures will go a long way to help protect yourself and prevent the spread of COVID-19.
