The Page 6 of the Daily Guide dated Friday, February 1, 2019 had a story captioned “2 Arrested Over Zylofon Properties” written by Melvin Tarlue. A portion of the story has been brought to the attention of the Economic and Organised Crime Office.
The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) wishes to state in unequivocal terms that the Deputy Executive Director, Nana Antwi did not state anywhere in the entire Press Briefing that was held on Thursday, 31st January, 2019 at the premises of EOCO that “Menzgold customers, who are believed to be about 46,000, are determined to protect assets of the company since they believe their eventual sale would help to get them paid”.
Nana Antwi rather answered to a question from the pressmen whether the Office knows the total number of customers affected and the amount involved in the Menzgold saga. He stated clearly that “this exercise of Menzgold complaints and flowing from which there could be a definitive or preliminary figure of the quantum of investments, EOCO never encouraged it rather our counterpart at the Police CID are those who received a lot of complaints and doing the compilation. Therefore, the Police CID could be contacted for such information. Customers who came to EOCO were told that our mandate does not allow us to take up such complaints individually. Our mandate is what we are working on now”. His response is contained a recording done during the Press Briefing.
Therefore we read with amazement the content of the paragraph stating that Nana Antwi mentioned that the customers are believed to be 46,000. We express our disappointment with the media reportage.
The Economic and Organised Crime Office in pursuit of its mission stands for integrity, professionalism and that has been our guiding principles.
