On 30th October, 2019 and 22nd January, 2020, two Ghanaian women were rescued from traffickers in Kurdistan in the Middle East. The rescue mission was facilitated by the International Justice Mission (IJM) and the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
The women (names withheld) were trafficked to Kurdistan in 2018 to work as domestic servants by an agent. However, due to harsh and dehumanising treatment meted out to them by their masters they decided to return to Ghana. Unfortunately, all their efforts to secure return ticket to Ghana was unsuccessful.
Officers of EOCO got wind of the information and on 26th October 2019 arrested the suspects involved; a Pastor, a Teacher and a Nurse in the Central Region who facilitated the trip of the women. The suspects have been granted bail and are currently assisting investigations.
REINTEGRATION
On return, the victims (names withheld) have been checked into shelters provided by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MOGCSP) and the International Justice Mission (IJM).
EOCO ensured that the victims undergo comprehensive medical examination with the support of IJM and the Ghana Police Hospital.
The International Justice Mission (IJM) is a global organisation that protects the poor and the vulnerable from violence throughout the developing world.
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) have also assessed the victims with reintegration package of their choice worth GHC5,400 each to trade and earn a living for themselves and their dependents.
