Human trafficking is a serious offence that involves the unlawful act of transporting or coercing people for exploitation such as forced labour, sexual exploitation or other forms of exploitation in order to benefit from their work or service. In simple terms, it is the trade in human beings which can occur within a country or from one country to another.
Human trafficking is different from ‘People smuggling,’ which is normally done with the consent of the person being smuggled.
Trafficking victims normally face social alienation in the host countries. Other negative happenings include: intolerance, stigmatization, social exclusion, forced prostitution and sexual slavery or abuse, torture and brainwashing.
Penalty the Human Trafficking Act, 2005 Act 694 prescribes a minimum penalty of five years’ imprisonment or a maximum of 25 years’ imprisonment for all forms of trafficking.
